“Robotic-assisted surgery is an important and exciting medical breakthrough,” said Timothy McKenna, DO,

With the da Vinci system, the chief surgeon sits a few feet away from the patient viewing a magnified, three-dimensional
image of the surgical field while manipulating the electro-mechanically enhanced instruments through tiny incisions.
The surgeon's movements are transmitted into precise, real-time movements of the instruments actually operating
on the patients. Another surgeon or nurse practitioner stands at the patient bedside to assist. Since the
surgery is performed through tiny openings, the patient loses less blood and enjoys a faster recovery.
The robotic-assisted technology also allows surgeons to do incredibly delicate work. With the da Vinci
system, enhanced vision, along with the unsurpassed precision and control of the tiny surgical instruments, allow
surgeons to perform what was once thought to be impossible.
In addition to the surgeons' specialized training, Sparrow staff on 7 Newman, 7 South and in the operating room who
work with the robot, have advanced skills and have also received specialized training. Sparrow's staff is specialized
enough to be a leader in robotic training in Michigan, providing training, information and resources to nurses,
physicians and surgical technologists throughout Michigan.
